Three knitting designers in the space of two weeks! Actually four, but Arne and Carlos are often thought of as ArneandCarlos. First of course was Deborah Newton at the RI guild meeting. Then a couple of friends and I went to Barrington as Knit One Quilt Too was sponsoring a talk and classes with Arne and Carlos. We went to the talk, which was about how the two incredibly talented guys ended up as knitting designers who have published several books, and travel all over from their home in Norway to share their love of knit and crochet. I was so inspired that I took action on my goal of learning to crochet by buying one of their books.
This is the afghan I plan to crochet, which will also help with my goal of using up scrap and stash yarn. I ordered the book from Trafalgar Square Books, full price, instead of from Amazon for $6 less, as monopoly Amazon has enough business. (I'm sure my purchase elsewhere really affected their bottom line, not, but it's the thought that counts.) I ordered the book on a Friday and received it the Monday! Who needs Amazon Prime?!
Then Josh Bennet spoke at the Boston guild. He too was funny and inspiring. He has a great line of men's sweaters; I only wish there was a man in my family who liked wearing sweaters.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. You know that the presence of a gun in a DV situation can be a lethal mix, which is why Moms/Everytown fought so hard to have the Protect RI Families bill passed. A couple weeks ago I went to the vigil in Westerly, and several people were asked to read the plaques on the Silent Witnesses who were killed in DV situations in South County RI over the years, and not just from guns. It was heartbreaking. I read this little girl's story aloud.
As another woman read a plaque, I realized she was reading about the young woman who was shot and killed in front of her two young children by her boyfriend, who was our next door neighbor's son and stepson. This was in 1993. According to the online DV court notes, Michelle had been living with David for several years. He reports that he was playing around with a gun when it 'went off' and accidentally killed Michelle. She reportedly was holding her son's hand at the time.' I never had met the man, and did not know the parents well. They must have been in their 60's at the time; now both have passed away while the son was still in prison. I felt terrible for them as well.
Oh that is so sad. I am glad your law was passed and it will keep some people safe at least. Oh designers everywhere! Arne and Carlos are coming to The Mainland, so too far away for me. I buy from a local bookshop. They are well supported and have expanded twice in the last two years. It is the principle that counts. Happy crocheting!

Such sad stories, but ones that need to be told.
That is going to be one fantastic afghan. Reminds me that I have an unfinished Babette in storage. And an almost finished Ripple Afghan.....I’m sure yours will be done before I have access to those two again. Lol
